![]() ![]() I may very well experiment (one of these days) with trying to seal each "head" and see if my new radials will stay inflated without tubes (I will let all of you know the result). It has a 1.3" whitewall (very nearly what the stock bias ply 8.00x14 tires had) and is only 0.1" different from the stock outside tire diameter. I went with 15" wire wheels and a P215-75-15 radial from American Classics. This set is just like the original accessory. Other options included wire wheels, two-tone paint, air conditioning and. Then, don't forget, that all the other "heads" will rub against a tube unless a liner is installed. Set includes 4 chrome wire baskets, 4 hub caps with red painted accents and all the retainer clips and rubber bumpers necessary. Thunderbird engine options ranged from the standard 390-cubic-inch V-8 base to a 406-cubic-inch, 405-horsepower engine. I don't know exactly how a tubeless tire seals (downward pressure on the wheel rim bead or sideward pressure on the bead side lip). Cadillac revised the center cap on its 15-inch wire wheel covers it had been using since 1976, now in use only on the rear-wheel-drive Fleetwood Brougham. I thought about sealing each spoke "head" on my new wheels until is saw that the outer row impinged on the bead. Ford now offered the ’83 Cougar / Thunderbird style 14-inch wire wheel cover on the Mustang LX through 1991. But, the spoke "heads" intrude on the outside bead where a tubeless tire normally seals. This presents more spoke for viewing pleasure compared to other cars. Don't forget that the Thunderbird wire wheels are "lip laced". ![]()
